If your microphone isn’t working during an AI Roleplay, work through these steps from top to bottom. Most issues are resolved in the first two sections.

Quick Basics

Your browser may be listening to the wrong mic source (such as a webcam mic instead of a headset).Fix: Select the correct microphone in your OS sound settings and in the roleplay’s microphone selection menu (see App-Specific Tools below).
System volume or input gain may be turned down.Fix: Raise mic input volume in your system sound settings and check the in-app input meters.
Many USB and Bluetooth headsets have hardware mute switches.Fix: Check for a mute button on your headset, inline cable controls, or companion headset software.
A loose USB connection or unpaired Bluetooth device can prevent audio capture.Fix: Reconnect or re-pair your Bluetooth device, try a different USB port, and avoid USB hubs.

Browser and Site Settings

The site needs explicit permission to access your microphone.Fix (Chrome): Click the lock icon in the address bar, go to Site settings, and set Microphone to Allow. Refresh the page. For detailed steps on all browsers, see Microphone, Audio, and Camera Permissions.
Privacy or audio extensions can block microphone capture.Fix: Disable extensions temporarily, try an incognito/private window, or ensure the tab is not muted for input.
Conferencing apps like Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams can take exclusive control of the mic.Fix: Quit other conferencing or recording apps before starting your roleplay.

Operating System

Windows requires apps and browsers to be granted microphone access.Fix: Go to SettingsPrivacy & securityMicrophone → enable Allow apps to access your microphone and make sure your browser is toggled on. Then go to SettingsSoundInput and select the correct device.
macOS requires per-app microphone permission.Fix: Go to System SettingsPrivacy & SecurityMicrophone and enable your browser. Then go to System SettingsSoundInput and select the correct device.
Outdated audio drivers can cause capture failures.Fix: Update your operating system and audio drivers, then reboot.

Network and Environment

Some networks restrict WebRTC connections used for real-time audio.Fix: Test on a home network or mobile hotspot. If that works, see Firewall Issues for next steps.
Heavy downloads or CPU spikes can disrupt audio capture.Fix: Close background apps, pause large downloads, and ensure a stable internet connection.

App-Specific Tools

Replay has built-in tools to help diagnose microphone issues:

Real-time Transcription

Start a roleplay, click the settings gear, then select Chat. If your words appear in the transcript, your mic is working.

Microphone Selection

During a roleplay, click the settings gearMicrophone selection menu to choose a specific device rather than “Default.”

Advanced Checks

  • Multiple microphones: Explicitly pick the device in both the roleplay settings and browser site permissions.
  • Hardware acceleration: Enable hardware acceleration in your browser settings, then fully close and reopen the browser.
  • Audio enhancements (Windows): Go to Sound settings, select your input device, and disable Enhancements and Spatial sound.
  • USB power management: Disable USB selective suspend in advanced power settings, or try a powered USB port.

Still Not Working?

If none of the above resolves the issue:
  1. Restart your browser and computer
  2. Test with Chrome or Edge (recommended browsers)
  3. Try a different microphone (built-in or wired headset)
  4. Contact support at [email protected] with:
    • Your network type (home, office, VPN)
    • OS and browser versions
    • Microphone model
    • When the issue started
