If you’re not hearing anything during an AI Roleplay, the issue is usually a simple setting. Work through these steps from top to bottom.

Quick Basics

Audio may be routing to the wrong device (unused headphones, a monitor without speakers, etc.).Fix:
  • macOS: Click Control CenterSound → select the correct Output device
  • Windows: Click the speaker icon in the taskbar → select the correct Output device
  • Chrome: Click the site’s audio control during a call to select an output device
System, app, or browser tab volume may be too low or muted.Fix: Raise system volume, check the app’s volume slider, and on Windows check the Volume Mixer to ensure your browser isn’t muted.
Your browser tab may have been muted (look for a muted speaker icon on the tab).Fix: Right-click the tab and select Unmute site. Check that no extensions are auto-muting tabs.

Device and Connection

Output may be routed to Bluetooth headphones that are powered off or out of battery.Fix: Power on and charge your headphones, reconnect them, or switch output to your built-in speakers.
Audio may be set to output through a monitor that doesn’t have speakers.Fix: Change your audio output to laptop speakers or external speakers.
Outdated drivers can cause audio playback issues.Fix: Update your operating system and audio drivers, then restart your machine.

Browser and Site Settings

Your browser may be preventing sound playback.Fix (Chrome): Click the lock icon in the address bar → Site settings → set Sound and Microphone to Allow. Refresh the page. For detailed steps, see Microphone, Audio, and Camera Permissions.
The site may select an inactive output device when multiple devices are connected.Fix: Explicitly choose your preferred output device in your system sound settings.
Real-time audio can glitch without hardware acceleration.Fix: Enable hardware acceleration in your browser settings, fully close and reopen the browser, and try incognito mode to rule out extension conflicts.

Network and Security

WebRTC connections used for roleplay audio may be blocked on your network.Fix: Test on a home network or mobile hotspot. If that works, see Firewall Issues for next steps.
Packet loss prevents audio from streaming properly.Fix: Move closer to your router, use a wired Ethernet connection, and close bandwidth-heavy apps.

Operating System Specifics

Audio enhancements can distort or block playback.Fix: Go to Control PanelSound → select your output device → Properties → disable Enhancements and turn off Spatial sound.
The balance slider may be off-center, or output may be set to AirPlay or a monitor.Fix: Go to System SettingsSoundOutput → select the correct device and center the Balance slider.

Advanced Checks

  • Volume mixer (Windows): Check that your browser isn’t muted in the Windows Volume Mixer.
  • Extension conflicts: Ad blockers and privacy extensions can interfere with audio. Try disabling them or using incognito mode.
  • Competing audio apps: Quit Zoom, Teams, or other conferencing apps that may be taking exclusive control of audio output.

Still Not Working?

If none of the above resolves the issue:
  1. Restart your browser and computer
  2. Test with Chrome or Edge (recommended browsers)
  3. Try a different output device (built-in speakers, wired headphones)
  4. Contact support at [email protected] with:
    • Your network type (home, office, VPN)
    • OS and browser versions
    • Audio output device
